How to Create a Reading Nook in Any Apartment
A reading nook doesn’t require a bay window or a spare room. With a little creativity, you can carve out a cozy reading spot in almost any apartment.
Find your corner
Look for underused corners, the space beside a window, or even a section of wall that currently has nothing on it. You don’t need much space — just enough for a chair and a small side table.
The essential elements
A comfortable chair
This is the most important investment. Look for an armchair or accent chair with good back support. Thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace often have great finds for under $100.
A good reading light
A clip-on reading light or a small arc floor lamp positioned over the chair is ideal. Warm bulbs only.
A side table or tray
You need somewhere to put your tea. A small side table, a wooden tray on the floor, or even a stack of books works perfectly.
A soft throw blanket
Drape a throw over the arm of the chair. It adds texture, warmth, and makes the nook feel intentionally designed.
A small bookshelf or stack of books nearby
Having your books within arm’s reach completes the reading nook feel. A small floating shelf above the chair works beautifully.
Define the space
Use a small area rug to anchor the nook and make it feel like its own zone within the room. Even a 3×5 rug under the chair changes the feel entirely.
Total budget
You can create a fully functional, beautiful reading nook for $100–$200 if you shop secondhand for the chair and look for deals on the accessories.
